Basil Fuleihan Foundation Words for Peace
In
the wake of the tragic passing of Dr. Basil Fuleihan, his wife, Yasma,
refused to fall into the trap of hatred and vengeance, and instead
founded the Basil Fuleihan Foundation in an attempt to empower and
encourage the citizens of Lebanon to be hand-in-hand following the path
of peace and progress, by giving them a voice with which they could
express their vision for their country's future.
Promoting a message of peace and tolerance, the Basil Fuleihan
Foundation proudly launches the Words for Peace youth competition for
expressing peace though words and drawings. Open to students aged 13 to
18 in schools across Lebanon, this project is being held in
collaboration with the Ministry of Education and Higher Learning.
Submitted essays or comic strips should address individual ideas about
perceptions of peace, and discuss theories of how peace could be
achieved. Topics may be explored from many angles, including (but not
limited to): Friendship, Family, Neighbours, or School. Papers may have
a local, national or international focus, and may be literal,
philosophical or a combination. Please note that any submissions
promoting religious or political intolerance will be disqualified.
There are two categories of participation - Category I for ages 13 - 15,
and Category II for ages 16 - 18.
All submissions will be evaluated by two separate committees of experts
and professionals from the Basil Fuleihan Foundation and the Ministry of
Education and Higher Learning. The top three finalists in each category
will be selected and their applications will be submitted to a high
profile Final Jury, which will choose one winner from each category. The
prize for each category is enrolment in a summer camp.
The final date for accepting applications to the Basil Fuleihan
Foundation Words for Peace competition is December 1, 2008. To submit
